Abstract | Neoliberal globalization, this chapter argues, should be seen as a veritable ontological occupation of relational worlds. In this context, any workable notion of sustainability should aim at fostering the conditions for ‘a world in which many worlds fit’, as the Zapatista claims. More than in academic proposals, clues for sustaining the pluriverse are found at present in territorial struggles against extractivism; this is illustrated with some Latin American experiences. Sustaining a multiplicity of worlds, finally, calls for types of ontological design that enable the perseverance of territories of difference—designs for the pluriverse. The conclusion makes the case for a political ontology approach to the anthropology of sustainability, one that brings to the fore the limits of Western/modern social theory for understanding the range of experiences and knowledges emerging from territorially based worlds. |
